Things to do in Tenerife

As you would expect from a Spanish holiday destination, Tenerife has plenty of opportunities for those people wanting to get away from the hotel pool or the beach. The majority of these are near the west coast resorts, and many offer a free bus service from Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.

A number are water related; either on it, in it, or under it.

Aqualand Costa Adeje

The Aqualand Costa Adeje waterpark and dolphinarium is situated in the Costa Adeje area of Playa de la Americas. Bob Diving

The Breathing Observation Bubble (BOB) is a type of underwater scooter which eliminates the need for underwater breathing apparatus It is advertised as being suitable for all, but you need to be able to swim, be in good health, at least 1.55 metres tall and under 74 years of age. The trip runs out of Puerto Colon harbour in Playa de las Americas. Although it lasts around 2 hours in total, you will be underwater for about 30 - 40 minutes. La Gomera

La Gomera is the second smallest island on the Canary Archipelago. It is an amazing mixture of rugged mountains, earthy valleys, tropical misty forests and a fascinating ocean.

Two long established operators run ferries from Los Christianos to San Sebastian in La Gomera:-

  • Navieras Armas ( operate a large car-ferry which takes approximately 90 minutes for the crossing and runs 2 - 3 times a day.
  • Fred Olsen Express ( operate a high speed ferry sailing several times a day with a Crossing time of just 35 minutes

A new fast ferry Garajonay Expres ( is planned for the summer of 2009. She will be the only ferry to sail to the other La Gomera ports of Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey.

Siam Park

Siam Park is the newest attraction in Tenerife and claims to be the most exciting water park in Europe! It is set in a tropical oasis which reflects the ancient kingdom of Thailand, and has seriously breath-taking water rides. Whale Spotting

Nostramo SA operate 3 boats from the south of Tenerife combining pleasure with whale and dolphin watching. Nostramo is a 100 foot schooner built in 1918 which takes 150 passengers. Tropical Delfin is a glassbottom catamaran with 250 seats and Royal Delfin a glassbottom catamaran with 220 seats. They offer 3, 4 and 5 hours trips and guarantee pilot whale sightings, as there is a steady population of about 400-500. This is a working banana plantation and a farm known as Jardines del Atlantico. It features many different types of tropical plants and trees and also has an exhibition and model of the traditional agriculture and the water system used on Tenerife.

Botanical Gardens

The subtropical and tropical varieties throughout this park on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, are important not only for the beauty they create, but also for size, age, rarity and remote places of origin. It's one of the most popular, colourful and tranquil parts of the resort.

Camel Park

The Camel Park is in Los Cristianos . Open daily from around 10:00 to 17:00 it is not so suitable for the infirm or those that easily suffer from sea sickness.

Guimar Pyramids

Until quite recently these were believed to be terracing built by local farmers. But in 1991 the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl visited the Island to study them. Thor came to the conclusion that the pyramids were almost identical to pyramids in Peru and Mexico, and since then they have became a tourist attraction. Las Aguilas Jungle Park

Set high in the hills behind the resort of Los Cristianos in 75,000 sq. metres of tropical gardens Las Aguilas Jungle Park is worthy of a full day to see all the attractions. The park has a number of demonstrations and shows running throughout the day, including parrot shows, penguin feeding time and a free flying eagle demonstration. Loro Parque

Loro Parque is Tenerife's most popular wildlife centre and receives more than 1.3 million visitors each year. The exact translation is 'Parrot Park', but not only is it home to the largest parrot collection in the world, it also has the biggest dolphinarium in Europe and a large variety of other zoological attractions. It is situated at the outskirts of the northern resort of Puerto da la Cruz. The park has a large number of pizzeria, restaurants and shops and is open every day of the year from 08:30 to 17:00. Situated close to Los Christianos, this is both a botanical garden specialising in cacti and plant life from the arid regions, and an animal park, housing a variety of species from marmosets to terrapins.

Quad Park

The Quad Park is the only facility in Tenerife to offer 100% off road quading. Set in over 200,000 sq mts of land, the trails wind through beautiful and natural surroundings.
