Welcome to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital and commercial centre. Almost a third of the islands resident population live in the capital. As you would expect from any captial, there are great cultural and leisure offerings available to its visitors. Shoppers won't be dissappointed either as the pedestrianised shopping area provides outlets offering products and goods from all over the world.

The Auditorio de Tenerife is a fairly new addition to the city. The auditorium is designed to resemble a sea shell and it's Santa Cruz's main concert hall.

In the absense of a natural beach, Santa Cruz commissioned the building of the Parque Maritimo Cesar Manrique lido. Here you'll find a huge seawater pool surrounded by palms and sunloungers. More fun in the sand can be had at the man made Playa de Las Teresitas which is 7km north of the city. It has one and half kilometres of golden sand imported from the Sahara in the 1970s. This is perhaps the best beach anywhere on the island.

The capital is also home to the islands major port which ferries people to and from such destinations as Las Palmas, the other canary islands and mainland Spain and other international destinations. From here you can also watch the huge container ships and cruise liners come and go.
