Tenerife is the member of the Canary Islands which are a Spanish archipelago situated some 100km from the north western coast of Africa, in the Atlantic ocean. The Canary Islands consist of seven major islands with Teneriffe being the largest, having an area of 2034 square kilometers. Being a Spanish territory, the currency is the Euro. The captial of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Tenerife is a volcanic island and the landscape is dominated by Mount Teide. Mount Teide has an elevation of 3,718 m (12,198 ft) above sea level making it not only the islands highest mountain but also the highest mountain in Spain. The volcanic nature of the island has produced rugged landscapes and black volcanic beaches. The volcano at Teide's peak is the third largest on earth and has now been given protected status within the Parque Nacional del Teide (Teide National Park). The site has also been named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in June 2007. It's a must visit site when holidaying to Tenerife.
Tenerife is often referred to as the 'Island of Eternal Spring' due to it's steady weather system. Temperatures on the island rarely stray from the averages which dip to 20ºC in the winter months and peak at 28ºC during the summer months. Temperatures would be higher is if where not the tradewinds and the cool sea currents surrounding the island.
The island of Tenerife could be described as having two very different sides, the northern region being rich in culture and history with a cool tropical climate. The south of the island is very different being dryer, hotter and with culture giving way to entertainment and leisure. The focus being a 60km stretch of coast between Costa del Silencio and Los Gigantes which is home to numerous tourist resorts and leisure parks.
